Smart controller.
The Boum controller is a smart, solar-powered pump — and the heart of the Boum irrigation system. It automatically supplies the connected pots with water several times a day.
It also serves as the lid of the water tank. The tank provides several weeks of autonomy, so you don’t need a water connection.
Thanks to the integrated water level sensor, the app shows you the tank’s fill level and reminds you when it’s time to refill.
You have two options for watering:
Wick irrigation (e.g. Boum Core or Boum Pro): especially water-efficient and low-maintenance — ideal for an easy start.
Drip irrigation (Boum Drip): flexible, precise, and ideal if you like fine control.
For many people, one of our kits, such as Boum Core, is the easiest way to get started with smart irrigation.

Self-regulating wick irrigation.
Advantages : self-regulating, inspired by nature, efficient water consumption, perfectly matched with the Boum substrate.
Disadvantage: Do you already have your own pots? Then Boum Drip is the right solution for you.
Thanks to our special wick irrigation system, Boum pots make caring for your plants easier than ever before, because they work by means of sub-irrigation, i.e., irrigation from below.
Each pot consists of a small water reservoir and a soil container. Eight wicks extend from the soil container into the reservoir below, drawing up water and releasing it onto the soil above. The soil soaks it up like a sponge until it is saturated. This ensures the plant always has water available and can absorb exactly as much as it needs through its roots, just as it works in nature.
When the plant's roots draw water upwards, the moisture content of the soil drops, and the wicks reabsorb water until the soil is saturated again. This empties the water reservoir below. The smart pump refills this reservoir daily by transferring water from the water tank into the reservoir.
With one controller, you can automatically water up to 12 pots by connecting them in series.
To the Boum Core Set
Drip irrigation for existing pots
Advantages: can be used with all pots, even those that are already planted.
Disadvantage: less water-saving than Boum pots, less efficient water absorption by the plant.
If you already have your own pots and don't want to give them up, the Boum drip irrigation system is the perfect solution. Unlike sub-irrigation, here the water drips onto the soil from above ☔️.
The smart Boum control system regulates pump duration and water volume. A specially developed algorithm takes into account factors such as the weather conditions at your location and the number of connected pots. This makes our method significantly more water-efficient than other drip irrigation systems.
In addition, we provide recommendations on the water consumption of individual plants based on scientific data, experience and the targeted use of artificial intelligence.

More about the Boum app
Soil and substrate for wick irrigation
Boum substrate is matched to our wick-watering system. Its structure helps to absorb water evenly and retain it in the soil.
It is produced in Switzerland, organically pre-fertilized, and approved for organic farming.
For Boum, we recommend this soil, especially for wick-watering. However, you can also use other soil.
Through many tests with different plants, we have seen that the right soil makes a difference. It supports consistent moisture in the pot and thus stable conditions for the roots.

FAQ
What is Boum, how does Boum work, and who is Boum suitable for?
What is Boum?
Boum is an automatic watering system for plants. It reliably supplies pots with water and takes regular watering off your hands in everyday life. The system is designed for people who want an easier way to care for their plants — at home, on the balcony, or on the terrace.
How does Boum work, and why is it better than other irrigation systems?
With wick irrigation, the plant takes up exactly as much water as it needs. The water is drawn up from below into the soil and is made evenly available to the roots. This means you do not need to set pump intervals or water quantities for each pot individually. Water uptake is largely self-regulating within the pot.
Unlike traditional drip irrigation, the water is not applied from above onto the soil, but supplied from below inside the pot. For existing pots, Boum Drip is also available as a drip irrigation option. Here, the system automatically controls the water supply to match the setup.
Who is Boum suitable for?
Boum is suitable for all people who would like to experience the magic of their own plants.
We designed Boum specifically for people who
- do not have a green thumb, but would like to grow plants
- are often on the go and don't always have time for watering.
- are unsure about how to handle plants
- are interested in the connection between nature and technology
- Want your own plant paradise without any effort?
Irrigation
How exactly does the Boum irrigation system work, what's included, and do I need any connections for it?
How does the Boum irrigation system work in detail?
The Boum irrigation system supplies plants with water from below. In each pot, wicks draw water from a lower reservoir into the soil. Every Boum pot consists of a water reservoir at the bottom and a planter at the top. The wicks connect the two sections and distribute water evenly into the soil.
The soil retains the moisture, and the plant takes up exactly as much water as it needs through its roots. As soon as the soil becomes drier, the wicks draw up more water again.
To keep the reservoirs inside the pots from running empty, the controller automatically refills them from the water tank — several times a day if need
What is the control system?
The Boum controller combines the pump, sensors, and power supply in a single unit. It sits on the water tank as a lid and transports water from there to the connected pots. In doing so, it measures key values such as the water level in the tank and supports the automatic refilling of the pot reservoirs. This information can be displayed in the app.
Do I need a water connection on my balcony for the Boum system?
No! Boum was specifically designed for people without a water connection on their balcony, as this is often not the case, especially on smaller (city) balconies. The Boum water tank serves as a water reservoir and can be refilled manually every few weeks (you will be notified!). The Boum control system also collects rainwater that falls into the water tank.
How big is the water tank, and how often do I need to refill it?
The Boum water tank holds 32 L (Core) or 35 L (Pro). The Pro version also includes an extension with a 55 L water tank.
In the height of summer, an outdoor pot consumes an average of 0.5–1 liter of water per day. This means that with 3 pots, you'll need to refill the 35-liter tank every 2–4 weeks in summer, with 5 pots every 1–2 weeks, and so on. Note : The larger the plant, the greater its water consumption.
Indoors, a pot uses approximately 0.1 liters of water per day. A full tank therefore lasts for several weeks to months.
Can I connect the water tank to the water supply/rainwater pipe?
This is possible with another float valve and a hole. Contact us if you are interested in this option.
Do you offer an assembly service?
That's not necessary :-). The system is very easy to set up. Our step-by-step setup videos in the app show you how. Setup takes about 15 minutes.
If you still have questions, we'll be happy to help you personally in our chat.
Which plants can I grow with Boum irrigation?
We have successfully tested the irrigation system with many different indoor and outdoor plants. The system is particularly well-suited for plants that prefer moist soil. Plants that prefer dry conditions (e.g., succulents) are less suitable.
Does the irrigation also work in winter?
The controller is not designed for sub-zero temperatures. If you use the system outdoors, we recommend storing the controller indoors during winter.
The pots (planted or empty) can remain outdoors all year round. The reservoirs of the pots and the water tank must be emptied.
Indoors, the system can be used all year round.
Does the irrigation also work without WiFi?
Yes. When the irrigation system is installed in a new location, it must be connected to Wi-Fi (or a mobile hotspot) once for setup. Afterward, it functions autonomously, even without Wi-Fi. In this case, no sensor data will be displayed in the app.
Can I use irrigation for my holiday home if I don't have WiFi there?
Yes. Irrigation also works without Wi-Fi, however in this case no data on water consumption etc. is sent.
If you still wish to do this, we recommend an LTE router with an affordable IoT data plan. This way, you can always keep an eye on your irrigation system at your second home.
Do hoses have to be laid for irrigation?
Yes, the pots are connected to the tank via a hose. We supply the irrigation system with black 7 mm PVC hoses featuring a quick-connect system and a hose cutter. This makes connecting and routing the hoses very easy. The connection is located at the bottom of the pot, allowing the hoses to be discreetly positioned and not visually obtrusive.
Pots
What is so special about Boum pots, how exactly do they work, and can you connect your own pots to them?
How does a Boum pot work?
Each Boum pot consists of a water reservoir (at the bottom) and a soil container that sits on top of the reservoir. Special capillary wicks connect these two parts, drawing water from the bottom and releasing it to the soil above. When the plant is thirsty, it draws water from the soil, causing the soil's moisture content to decrease. This automatically replenishes the water from the reservoir below via the wicks (like a sponge soaking up water). As a result, the soil remains consistently moist – ideal conditions for the plants!
The reservoirs in the pots are then refilled once a day by the control system, always with precisely the amount of water the plant has needed since the last refill. A built-in float valve mechanically regulates the water flow.
What is the difference between the Core and the Pro pots?
The Boum Core pots are made of PP, are relatively thin-walled and therefore extremely lightweight. They have a rounded shape and are currently available in pebble grey and a volume of 13 L.
Boum Pro pots are made from recycled PET and PP and rock dust and finished by hand. They have thicker walls, are suitable for both smaller and larger plants, and are available in 3 different colors (grey, taupe, white) and 2 shapes (round, oblong).
Can the Core and Pro pots be connected to the same system?
Yes, all Boum pots are compatible with all controllers and water tanks because they use the same connections. Pots from different product lines can easily be connected to one system.
How many Boum planters can I connect to a water tank?
We recommend connecting up to 12 pots to the water tank (32 L capacity for Core, 35 L capacity for Pro). With the 55 L Pro water tank, you can water up to 20 pots simultaneously. Outdoors, a pot uses 0.5–1 L of water per day in the height of summer, and indoors approximately 0.1 L of water per day year-round.
Are there Boum pots in other shapes and colors?
Boum pots are available in various colors, sizes, and shapes.
The Boum Core pots are currently available in pebble grey as a round pot with a 13 L capacity. More colors and shapes may be added in the future.
The Boum Pro pots are available in grey, taupe and white. They come as pots with a volume of 15 L or 30 L, as well as balcony planters with a volume of 13 L.
Soil
Why is Boum's substrate particularly suitable for the Boum system, is it environmentally friendly, and for which plants is it suitable?
Which soil should I use with Boum irrigation?
If you are using the system outside, we recommend the Boum substrate, which was specially developed for Boum irrigation. However, you can also use your own soil. It is important that it has a good connection to the wicks and draws the water up into the upper layers.
If you use the system indoors, we recommend Boum indor substrate.
What makes Boum substrate so special?
The Boum outdoor substrate was specially developed by us and is designed for sub-irrigation in Boum pots. Thanks to the added wood chips and pebbles, it is very structured and not too dense, allowing for optimal water absorption and distribution. It is also enriched with biochar, naturally pre-fertilized, and a 100% Swiss product, without environmentally harmful peat or imported coconut fibers.
Boum outdoor substrate is made from a by-product of Swiss sugar beet production, is produced and packaged for us in batches, and is therefore as fresh as possible.
Is the Boum outdoor substrate suitable for all plants?
Boum outdoor substrate is a universal substrate that works with most commercially available outdoor plants.
The Boum indoor substrate works for most houseplants (except succulents).
Do I have to fertilize the Boum soil?
The Boum outdoor substrte is organically pre-fertilized. Depending on the plant, the fertilization lasts for 4 - 6 weeks. You can then add more fertilizing with the Boum fertilizer. The app tells you when the right time is.
Is Boum Earth environmentally friendly?
Boum outdoor substrate consists exclusively of by-products from Swiss forestry and agriculture, is free of environmentally harmful peat or coconut fibers and contains biochar - making it very climate-friendly and good for nature.
Boum indoor substrate for houseplants consists of pumice, lava, and expanded clay and is also free of peat and coconut. This makes it very climate-friendly.
All Boum soils are manufactured in Switzerland and are very environmentally friendly thanks to short transport routes.
Is the Boum Earth organic?
Boum's outdoor and indoor substrates are approved for organic farming.
