Our Plant Tips

These plant partners we recommend

Over several years, we have validated through tests and trials which plants work particularly well in the Boum System – and where a little caution is advised. A little spoiler: almost all plants work.

Below you will find tips on: vegetables, herbs, flowers & wildflowers, small trees, seeds, houseplants and beneficial insects.

So far, we have worked with renowned partners and offered plants directly through our shop. We are now switching to a Trusted Partner Program to cover your plant needs even more broadly:

When you sign up for the newsletter, you receive 5% discount and when you buy a Boum System, you even get 10% discount with our partners Zulauf, VEG and the City and Urbanroots.

Vegetables

Vegetable plants are particularly well-suited for the Boum system because they need constant access to water for fruit development – exactly what the reservoir in the Boum pot provides.

With Boum, you can grow a wide range of vegetable plants. After some time, a trellis is usually beneficial to keep the plants stable under the weight of the fruit.

And the best part: In our tests, plants grew over 40% better with the Boum system than in conventional pots – details can be found in the linked blog post.

You can order vegetable seedlings online from our partners VEG and the City and Andermatt Biogarten from February and have them delivered directly to your home from May.

tree

How about a small apple tree on the patio – or cherries from your own balcony?

Even small trees can be cultivated in the Boum System. Many nurseries offer dwarf trees for this purpose: compact in growth and pleasantly small even after years – without constant repotting. You can order dwarf trees and shrubs from our partner Zulauf starting in February.

Not only fruit trees are possible, but also ornamental trees (e.g., Japanese maple) as well as Mediterranean species like olive, orange, or oleander.

Important: Make sure the root ball fits in the pot: Pot with 12-15 liters: root ball max. 7 liters. Pot with 30 liters: root ball max. 15 liters.

Herbs

Fresh herbs straight from your balcony – for salad toppings or the perfect sauce: sounds good, right?

In the Boum balcony box, you can plant up to 3 herb seedlings side-by-side and reliably care for them.

Whether it's classics like basil, rosemary, and mint, or something more exotic like lovage, salad burnet, and nasturtium – herbs thrive wonderfully in the Boum system. You can order the most popular herbs to your home from Andermatt Biogarten and VEG and the City.

Note: Some herbs (e.g., basil or sage) don't like continuous rain. It's best to place them in a covered spot to keep them happy longer.

Flowers & Wildflowers

Do you want a flourishing balcony or windowsill that also brings joy to bees and butterflies?

With the Boum system, you can grow a variety of flowers and wildflowers. Whether it's thirsty geraniums or blue mist shrubs that require less water: in the Boum pot, plants always get exactly as much water as they need, without being exposed to waterlogging. Flower seedlings are available from February at our partner VEG and the City.

Note: Orchids are among the few flowering plants for which the Boum system is not suitable, as they have very specific watering requirements.

seed

Do you prefer to grow your plants from seeds yourself? This is easily possible, but we recommend not sowing the seeds directly in the Boum pot, but letting them germinate first in a propagation pot.

After a few weeks, the seedlings can be easily transplanted into Boum pots. We recommend our long-standing partner Urbanroots as well as the excellent assortment from Andermatt Biogarten or VEG and the City if you want to purchase high-quality seeds.

houseplants

You want to green your living room or office – without the risk of over or under-watering? The Boum system also works indoors and is suitable for a variety of houseplants. We recommend our trusted partner VEG and the City 🪴

Whether it's a large Monstera or a delicate peace lily: many well-known (and also lesser-known) plants feel permanently at home in the Boum pot. Thanks to integrated safety features, you also don't have to worry about water leaking out and damaging your parquet flooring.

In combination with our houseplant soil, a constant soil moisture is created without the plants suffering from waterlogging.

Note: For drought-loving plants such as cacti or succulents, the Boum wick irrigation (Core, Pro) is not suitable 🌵.

Plant care

Plants in the Boum system can also be affected by pests – especially when they are outdoors and near other plants 🐛.

Besides chemical agents, there is a natural, targeted alternative: beneficial insects. Nematodes, parasitic wasps, predatory mites, and even ladybug larvae work specifically against certain pests and help protect your plants sustainably and environmentally friendly 🐞.

Boum recommends the comprehensive range of beneficial insects from Andermatt Biogarten.
