Our plant tips

We recommend these plant partners

Over several years, we've validated through tests and trials which plants thrive in the Boum system – and where a little more caution is advised. Spoiler alert: Almost all plants work. Below you'll find tips on: vegetables, herbs, flowers & wildflowers, saplings, seeds, houseplants, and beneficial insects. Previously, we collaborated with renowned partners and offered plants directly through our shop. Now, we're switching to a Trusted Partner Program to cover your plant needs even more broadly: Subscribe to our newsletter and receive a 5% discount, and even a 10% discount on the purchase of a Boum system from our partners Zulauf, VEG and the City, and Urbanroots.

Vegetables

Vegetable plants thrive in the Boum system because they need a constant supply of water for fruit development – exactly what the reservoir in the Boum pot provides. With Boum, you can grow a wide variety of vegetables. After a while, a trellis or other support structure is usually recommended to help the plants remain stable under the weight of the fruit. And the best part: In our tests, plants using the Boum system grew over 40% better than those in conventional pots – you can find more details in the linked blog post. You can order vegetable seedlings online from our partners VEG and the City and Andermatt Biogarten starting in February and have them delivered directly to your home from May onwards.

Trees

How about a small apple tree on the patio – or cherries from your own balcony? You can even cultivate small trees in the Boum system. Many nurseries offer dwarf trees for this purpose: compact in their growth and still pleasantly small even after years – without constant repotting.

You can order dwarf trees and shrubs from our partner Zulauf starting in February. Not only fruit trees are possible, but also ornamental trees (e.g., Japanese maple) as well as Mediterranean species such as olive, orange, or oleander.

Important: Make sure that the root ball fits in the pot: 12-15 liter pot: root ball max. 7 liters. 30 liter pot: root ball max. 15 liters.

Herbs

Fresh herbs straight from the balcony – perfect for salad toppings or the ideal sauce: sounds good, right? In the Boum balcony planter, you can plant up to three herb seedlings side by side and reliably care for them.

Whether classics like basil, rosemary, and mint, or something more unusual like lovage, lovage, and nasturtium – herbs thrive in the Boum system.

You can order the most popular herbs for home delivery from Andermatt Biogarten and VEG and the City.

Note: Some herbs (e.g., basil or sage) don't like prolonged rain. It's best to place them in a sheltered spot to keep them thriving for longer.

Flowers & Wildflowers

Do you want a blooming balcony or windowsill that bees and butterflies will also enjoy? With the Boum system, you can cultivate a wide variety of flowers and wildflowers.

Whether it's thirsty geraniums or less water-loving Russian sage, the plants in the Boum pot always get exactly the amount of water they need without being waterlogged. Flower seedlings are available from February onwards from our partner VEG and the City.

Please note: Orchids are among the few flowering plants for which the Boum system is not suitable, as they have very specific watering requirements.

Seeds.

Indoor plants

Want to add some greenery to your living room or office – without the risk of over- or under-watering? The Boum system works indoors and is suitable for a wide variety of houseplants.

We recommend our trusted partner VEG and the City 🪴 Whether it's a large Monstera or a delicate Peace Lily: many well-known (and lesser-known) plants thrive in the Boum pot. Thanks to integrated safety features, you don't have to worry about water leaking out and damaging your parquet flooring.

Combined with our potting soil, it creates a consistent level of moisture without causing waterlogging.

Note: The Boum wick watering system (Core, Pro) is not suitable for drought-loving plants such as cacti or succulents 🌵.

Plant care

Even plants in the Boum system can be infested by pests – especially if they are outdoors and near other plants 🐛. Besides chemical treatments, there is a natural, targeted alternative: beneficial insects. Nematodes, parasitic wasps, predatory mites, and even ladybug larvae act specifically against certain pests and help to protect your plants sustainably and in an environmentally friendly way 🐞. Boum recommends the comprehensive range of beneficial insects from Andermatt Biogarten.
