How Boum’s automatic drip irrigation works.
While our Boum pots are naturally self-regulating, as each plant simply takes as much water as it needs, watering with drippers in Auto Mode uses a special watering algorithm. Here we explain exactly how Auto Mode works to ensure targeted, water-saving watering.

How does Boum Auto Mode work?
With Boum drip irrigation, the app calculates the optimal amount of water for each plant at any given time. So your plants never get too little or too much water.

What does it take into account?
Auto Mode includes various factors in its calculations. Among other things, it takes into account the size of the pot (a small pot becomes saturated faster than a large one), the current temperature and whether it is raining. A sheltered pot behaves differently from one exposed to rain. Small plants in spring need less water than large plants in midsummer or when bearing fruit. And there is more evaporation in a sunny spot than in partial shade.
All these factors contribute to calculating the optimal amount of water.

How often does the app fetch the latest weather data?
The app fetches the latest weather data twice a day: the forecast for the day in the morning, and the actual measured values in the evening. The amount of water is then precisely determined based on this data.

Learning from Boum pots
How can the app's Auto Mode know exactly how much water a specific plant needs in a specific location?
We are constantly learning from thousands of active systems with Boum pots. Thanks to wick watering, a plant in a Boum pot always takes only as much water as it currently needs. The water level sensor tells us exactly how much water the plants need.
We combine this knowledge of water needs with data from public weather services to determine the ideal amount of water each day.

Do I need an internet connection?
A Wi-Fi connection is required to use all the features of Auto Mode.
If this is not possible, you can also set the watering interval and the amount of water pumped manually. In this case, watering will not adapt to the weather.

As every balcony and terrace has a slightly different orientation, you can also set the amount of water and watering times yourself. In Auto Mode, you can also fine-tune the amount of water calculated by the app to match your needs precisely.
