Smart Gardening with Boum: How the Boum control system measures balcony climate and water consumption

Smart Gardening mit Boum: So misst die Boum Steuerung Balkonklima und Wasserverbrauch

Discover the Boum control for your automatic irrigation: From the mini weather station to the precise water level sensor.

Three weeks of vacation, 30 degrees in the shade – and your balcony plants? They usually wouldn't survive. Unless you let technology water them for you: smart gardening. An automated irrigation system takes the daily watering work off your hands and provides you with all sorts of data: water level, water consumption, the microclimate on your balcony... Behind this is our unique sensor technology, which uses sophisticated technology to measure various parameters and sends the data to the Boum app.

Overview: The main advantages of smart control

More technology in everyday life? In the case of smart irrigation, this brings you many advantages: more time, fewer worries, and healthier plants. Smart control works in the background while you live your life. Here are the specific advantages at a glance:

Prevention instead of reaction
Frost warning, tank forecast, pump emergency stop. Problems are intercepted before they arise.

Sustainable and resource-efficient
Water only flows when it makes sense. The solar panel provides energy, and power consumption remains within limits.

Predictability
Reliable forecasts make care planning possible – practical before holiday weekends. You always know how long the water in the tank will last.

Transparency
You know the measured values, understand your plants, and can make decisions based on them.

Well-founded help
If questions arise, there's no guesswork. Thanks to the data, Herby (our AI assistant) or support can provide concrete help.

Your balcony gets its own weather station

In principle, the control can be seen as a compact weather station. The built-in precise temperature sensor and the solar panel record temperature and solar radiation. This is then combined with data from a weather API – so the control can notify you if strong winds are threatening or it's slowly getting frosty, and you can protect your plants in time.

Sustainable and water-saving: Flow sensor and hydraulics regulate water flow

Speaking of the right amount of water: this is where the flow sensor comes into play! It measures how quickly the pump sends water from the water tank to the reservoirs of the pots. As soon as the reservoirs are filled and float valves close, the water pressure changes. Then the sensor measures less flow, and the system understands: "Reservoir is full." If a defined limit is undershot, the control unit receives this feedback and automatically switches off the pump. This prevents too much water from being used and a flood from occurring.

So you can always be sure: there will be no overwatering of your plants, no empty tanks from endless pumping, and no unnecessary energy waste. This is sustainable and water-saving!

The distance sensor tells you the water quantity: The bat in the flower pot

"Distance sensor" sounds unexciting – but it is actually the main protagonist of the Boum system. It measures how much water is left in the tank, so you can keep track and your plants never go thirsty. Following the bat principle, it works like a small echo sounder:

  1. A transmitter sends sound waves towards the water surface in the water tank like a loudspeaker.
  2. These are reflected by the water surface.
  3. A receiver registers their return like a microphone.
  4. From the time that passes between sending and receiving, the control unit calculates the distance with millimeter precision and translates it into the exact water volume.

With this information, the system ensures your relaxation: it doesn't sound an alarm only when the tank is empty; instead, you can check at any time in the app how much water is still in the tank. You see the current fill level and, based on the water consumption of the last few days, even an estimate of how long the water is expected to last. A carefree vacation is thus guaranteed.

Power and reception: Continues to run even in bad weather

For everything to work, electricity is needed. The control system has everything under control here too. It monitors the battery level of the battery, which is fed by a solar panel. Depending on the status, the control system adjusts the sleep mode accordingly:

  • Charged battery: Control remains active more often.
  • Decreasing battery level: More frequent sleep mode.

The result: The system lasts longer even with a lack of sun, without losing functionality – it always pumps reliably.

A small tip:
If the sun doesn't show at all, the control can be briefly charged via the USB-C port at a household outlet. A full charge lasts a whole month. By the way, the control also always shows the Wi-Fi strength – so you can quickly see if there's a problem here.

For knowledge and control: All data converges in the app

All these measured values converge in the app – temperature curves, solar radiation, fill level, water consumption, battery charge level, Wi-Fi strength. There you will find everything clearly visualized in diagrams. This allows you to track developments, and the calculated forecasts let you plan. It's reassuring to know that the water in the tank will last for another two weeks!

If you want to know more, you'll find all the details and data progressions in the app. If you prefer it simple, you can just set alerts for low water levels, then refill the tank, and otherwise let the system do its work for you.

Herby, the AI assistant: Help based on your data

Not only do you see the data in the app – Herby knows it too. This is Boum's AI gardening assistant. He can combine general gardening knowledge from the plant database with your system data. This way, he always has the right answers to your questions: How much sun was there this week? When should the plant in pot two be fertilized? Herby doesn't guess, he knows exactly what's happening in your Boum system.

Success shows over a gardening season

Over a longer period, the effect of this interplay of plant knowledge and technology becomes truly clear. When it gets warm, the system immediately reacts to changing water requirements. Irrigation is adjusted, and your plants are ideally supplied despite the changed situation – without you having to do anything. A short heatwave while you're on vacation? No problem, you'll come home to a green and blooming balcony. When it gets colder again, no plants will accidentally drown. In the event of strong winds, you'll receive a push notification, and when winter approaches, you'll be warned in good time before the first frost. This way, you can always protect your plants in time. Thanks to on-demand irrigation, the plants grow much better and bear more fruit.

The technology is integrated into all Boum products

Whether Boum Pro or Boum Core – this control system is built into all of them. It has proven its worth and has already helped over 1,000 customers in Switzerland achieve a green balcony. That's why it won't be omitted from any system. The differences between the systems lie in the pot sizes and the materials used, but all collect the same measurements and send the data to your app!

Conclusion

The sensor technology in the Boum control is the central sensory organ of the smart system: temperature and sun in view, intelligent water management, precisely measured fill levels, optimized energy balance, and everything bundled for control in one app. Plus, there's Herby, who can help you based on the data. This ingenious technology in smart gardening saves time, ensures predictability, and provides sustainably irrigated, healthy plants.
